We were on a break!
Mother Nature has definitely PIVOTed to summer temperatures, at least, and she
has partially switched over to summer rainfall patterns. We still saw lots of
rain over the weekend, but it was of the nasty summer variety. You know, when the
storms just continually form over the same area and never move, dumping heavy
rain and possibly some hail? Or ever worse, the storms move northwest. Ugh, that's
just unnatural. So we're still waiting for the true summer pivot when the death
ridge sets up over the Southern Plains and quashes (English to Okie translation:
"squashes") any good rain chances. Looks like we're headed that way this week,
with the rain chances going away for the most part and headed towards lots of
blue skies and heat.
And it's about time. Even though some areas of the state still need a bit of rain,
especially that area from SW OK up into C OK that has missed out on quite a bit,
but folks like down in SE OK need a break. The last 30 days are the wettest since
at least 1921 down there, with an astounding 12.72 inches of rain on average
over that time frame...7.15 inches above normal!
And remember, that's on average. Our Mesonet site at Cloudy (HAHA!) has had
19.56 inches of rain over that time, more than 14 inches above normal. So
while the summer temperatures are here in full swing, much more July-like than
June, we now await the summer dry weather as well. We've only seen seven
triple-digit temps so far, but that will go up this week. And everybody has seen
a 90 now, at least.
Unfortunately, we've also seen heat index values above 110. That probably will
stick with us (pardon the pun) until September, maybe, with lots of ups and
downs.
What's "ups" vs. what's "downs" is up to you.
