Soup's on!

Wow, we've had two days of summer and the Mesonet social media pages are full of
a bunch of bellyaching. Now those bellyaches are due to heat cramps, the first
sign of heat stroke, but still. The problem is we went from an unusually cool and
wet April, May, and early June, right smack dab into nastiness. We still haven't
seen a hunnert (Okie to English translation: hundred), but the heat index smashed
that barrier and then some.

So we're still looking for our first official triple-digit temperature, but we
sure beat the "feels like" triple-digit mark. The problem is Nickelback (come on,
admit you like their music!), and also the frigging (Okie to English translation:
nice try, you trying to get me fired??) humidity. The NWS folks in Norman tell us
that the dewpoint values we're seeing now are in the 99th percentile for this
time of year. And let me tell you from somebody who lingers in the 10th
percentile, that's pretty darned high.

Our dewpoint temperatures peak from late June through August, but we're already
hitting those marks as you can see in this long-term average statewide
dewpoint temp graph (black line) vs. what we're seeing the last few days (green
line).

The figure at the top of this missive shows a cold front that should enter the
state tomorrow and try and trudge through the state for the next day or so,
before the heat overcomes it and it washes out. But for a few hours, it will
actually feel like early June and not mid-July. So we'll see some chances of
showers and storm late, and then very low chances for the next several days.
Don't expect what we were seeing the last couple of months, however. Maybe some
very isolated heavy rains, but nothing widespread.

The heat is on, I reckon (Okie to English translation: It's hot).
