Winter is upon you
Only now do we realize our folly in wishing summer to go away. Behold, the dregs
of winter, in mid-October! Dectober. Octember. Febtober. Octruary. The front
currently making its way through the state is a slap to fall's face, a punishment
for allowing the 80s and 90s to flourish up to this point. Bad fall. BAD!
We are watching the frigid air progress through northwestern Oklahoma, and it's
leaving people scrambling for coats and gloves in its wake.
Winds are howling from the northwest behind the front, and screaming from the
south ahead of it.
Northwest Oklahoma is headed for near record-breaking cold weather over the next
couple of nights, and the rest of us aren't too far behind. There's a freeze
watch out for the northwest. I would expect that to be expanded farther to the
southeast tomorrow night.
Be ready, because this meteogram is coming to your Mesonet site soon.
Now along and ahead of that front, watch out for some pretty hefty storms
later today. SPC forecasters think the greatest likelihood for storms will be
along and southeast of I-44. The usual threats will be present. The tornado
risk is low, but not zero. Big hail and severe winds are more likely.
More heavy rains are in store for southeast Oklahoma if those storms do pop
up. Unfortunately, not much for the core drought area across southwestern
Oklahoma.
If'n you're looking for some warm air, best drive southeast faster than the
front is moving. Eventually you'll hit water. Then you'll just have to wait
until this whole winter thing blows over. Maybe next week.
