Heat-nadoes
It just seems odd. It's May, we have severe weather risks last night and tonight,
but the highs are in the 90s and even a few 100s? What gives? No idea. It just
seems odd. When I think of severe weather days in May, I think maybe mid-80s with
high dewpoints (and the dewpoints acting as a limiting factor on how much heating
we have to work with). Well, now we're having the high heat AND the high
dewpoints.
It's not like it's a high-end severe weather day, either, but parts of Oklahoma
are in the Enhanced risk category (between slight and moderate), and as shown
previously, the tornado risk is low...but not zero. Hail and high winds are the
more likely culprit today and tonight.
We had some fierce storms travel through the Panhandle last night, but I haven't
seen any confirmed tornadoes just yet. Lots of hail and high winds, however.
Those storms, along with other scattered bouts with storms here and there, have
provided spotty relief throughout the holiday weekend.
Add more from last week and things are looking even better.
Heck, we even had cattle putting on their swimming trunks in the far western
Panhandle last week!
Make no mistake about it, however, summer is here. The summer heat dome is
building in a few weeks early, promising a scorching end of the week
(illustrated nicely here by the Shreveport NWS office).
Check out Friday's highs. Does that look like fun?
At least it will be June by then. But it ain't gonna stop there.
It's downhill from there. See ya next October (maybe November).
