Asbestos umbrellas

Remember the outlooks for July I sent out at the first of the month? Well, one of
them worked out sorta okay, but the other was a bust! The precip outlook called
for increased odds of above normal precipitation, and we're definitely going to
end up above normal for July.

With a statewide average of over 4 inches, and with more rain on the way tonight
and tomorrow, we're already above normal for the month.

How about temperatures though, where the outlooks called for increased odds of
BELOW normal temperatures?

The stats tell us this:

July 1-20 Statewide Average Temmperatures

Tmax Tmin Tavg
Average 90.9 70.4 80.4
Normal 92.8 69.5 81.1
Depart -1.9 0.9 -0.7

Not surprisingly, given the big rains we had the first nine days of the month,
we are a bit low on the daily average HIGH temperatures, but also given all the
moisture, we're a bit above the norm for low temps. Altogether, we're still
a bit below average for July.

HOWEVER, the last 6 or 7 days have been hot, there's just no way around it.
forget what the stats say, what do your armpits tell you? What do the Mesonet's
heat index maps tell you (yesterday for example)?

How about all the 100s we've had lately? And for one awesome little town (ahem,
BUFFALO!), they've seen 100s 8 days in a row!

And the heat is expected to continue right on through the next 7 days, with
perhaps a bit of a burp of rain in there to cool us down for a brief interlude.

The rain chances are pretty good across northern Oklahoma, with some darned good
totals for late July.

So while that rain might be sizzling as it falls, at least it will give part of
the state a cool down. Enjoy Tuesday and Wednesday

because Thursday, we're right back in the fire.
