Heat bursts, a new station, and just plain old heat

Let's start with da heat. Hey, guess what? It got hot yesterday? How hot? Well,
this hot.

Yep, you read that right ... 111 degrees in Freedom. That's the highest temperature
recorded by the Mesonet since several stations hit at least 112 degrees on August
4, 2012. The heat index map is even more impressive. It certainly spreads the
wealth around.

Yikes! That's a lot of 110s. Looks like 113 degrees at Alva, Medford and Bixby
led the state with that unfortunate mark. The cool down is on the way, however.
Highs starting on Sunday and throughout much of next week appear to be mainly
in the 80s with lows in the 60s. Maybe a few showers as well.

Want to see something else cool? Take a look at this morning's high temperature
map. This is since midnight.

Those 90s up around Osage County were due to a heat burst that occurred right
around midnight. Now heat bursts are old hat since the Mesonet came into
existence. For a very rudimentary explanation, a dying storm dumps its
evaporation-cooled air to the surface where it compresses and warms (i.e.,
the hair drier effect ... or in my case, a scalp drier). Check out the
meteogram for Wynona form last night.

You can see the temperature goes up dramatically as do the winds around 11 p.m.
or so. There are actually four temperature spikes, so possibly several different
heat bursts occurred. But the event was widespread, as evidenced by the high
temperature map.

We would like to officially welcome Tulsa into the Mesonet club with its very
own Mesonet station! Bixby is close, but Tulsa deserved its own. Now all those
Socs and Greasers can check the current weather before they rumble. Here are
