Heavy Rains Make Monday Soggy in South-Central OK
Gone are the flood-producing rains that plagued much of southern
Oklahoma yesterday. The rains spawned flash-flood warnings early in the
day as they propagated slowly toward the north from the
south. While several sites recorded more than an inch of rain, the
Pauls Valley Mesonet site observed the heaviest rains, which
easily surpassed four inches in just a few short hours. The rains
exceeded flash-flood guidance values, and warnings were
dispatched for the area.
Relief from droughty conditions plaguing the area is also an issue.
Whatever else history may say about yesterday's flood-producing
rains, they did not erase the bulk of long-term deficits that
emerged last autumn. For the water year (since Oct 1), the
area is still experiencing its seventh-driest since 1921. Yesterday's
gains, while substantial, are still working against the prolonged
accumulation of deficits over several months. The region still
needs more heavy rain events to return to normal.
