Irony: Heavy Rains Soak Northwestern Oklahoma, Drought Document Released

Training convection dumped more than half a foot of rainfall on parts
of northwestern Oklahoma today. Flash flooding occurred in several
counties overnight, and river flood warnings are in effect at a
couple of downstream locations.

Selected Mesonet rainfall totals, as of 10:00 am:
Cherokee 6.77" Camargo 3.52"
Woodward 5.50" May Ranch 3.43"
Alva 4.93" Medford 2.98"
Seiling 4.66" Buffalo 2.56"
Arnett 3.77" Slapout 1.29"
Freedom 3.66" Cheyenne 1.10"

The total at Cherokee represents more rainfall than the station observed
during the last seven months of 2001!

The Oklahoma Climatological Survey released a summary today chronicling
Oklahoma's Drought of 2001-02, which was worst in, you guessed it,
northwestern Oklahoma. OCS Event Summary ES 2002-02 documents the
drought's statistics, evolution and impacts, plus provides some
national and historical perspective.

The document can be found online at:

The Event Summary series is produced by OCS's Climate Information Group.
