Welcome, September
September has arrived in Oklahoma, and that arrival almost always
heralds change. Summer's grip loosens during September, during
which normal highs (depending on location within the state) migrate
from a few degrees either side of 90 F on the 1st to a few degrees
either side of 80 F on the 30th.
September also marks the onset of a secondary rainy season for all
but far northwestern Oklahoma. Climatologically, for most of the
state, the autumn transition months of September and October are wet.
Not quite as wet as April through June, but noticably improved from
the summer and winter months. In far eastern Oklahoma, this secondary
maximum continues well into November.
However, for far northwestern Oklahoma, September marks the tail end
of the summer rainy season. For nine of Oklahoma's 77 counties,
normal September rainfall is less than normal August rainfall. All
nine of these counties are either in the panhandle, or within a few
county lines of it:
