August 2002: You Can Relieve Some of the People Some of the Time ...
The month of August is almost in the books, and preliminary data
indicate that it will go down as wetter than normal for most
of the state. Barring negative rainfall today and tomorrow (and
after this last drought episode, the Ticker staff thinks negative
rainfall might just be possible), the Panhandle region appears
to have experienced its first above-normal precip month since
January 2002, and its second since May 2001 (a span of 15 months).
As is typical of Oklahoma during summer, this month's rainfall
fell in highly localized patterns. In other words, some counties
and even some sections of counties, experienced a little more of
nature's bounty than neighboring counties (and sections of counties).
Much of southwestern and west-central Oklahoma, still recovering
from drought impacts, received less than an inch of rainfall this
month. Parts of east central Oklahoma also observed very little
rainfall.
