On This Day in Oklahoma Weather History
On May 11, 1950, some impressive one-day rainfall totals were
observed in Oklahoma. The Purcell cooperative observer station
recorded 13.58 inches on that date. 1.97 inches fell at the
station on May 10, for an event total of 15.55 inches!
The largest values were observed in central Oklahoma, but the most
significant flooding occurred in eastern Oklahoma. In fact, the
Illinois River produced its flood of record (at the time) from the
rains of that day.
In May 1950, the newly-constructed Fort Gibson Reservoir filled up
... a year ahead of schedule!
