(Here's an unobstructed view for you eastern OK folks...bad Baseball Fury. BAD!)

If you woke up in Kenton this morning, you're lucky, seeing how it is the second most awesome place in Oklahoma (sorry Kenton, Buffalo is still #1). But you also awoke there to experience an all-time record temperature fall (or winter, really).
This morning, just in time for Halloween, the Kenton Mesonet site reported the lowest temperature ever recorded in Oklahoma for October at a crisp zero degrees. And, obviously, that's the lowest temperature ever recorded for this early in the season. Here's your new look at the lowest October (and this early in the season) temperatures from the record books. Move over 1993.
-***- ------------------------------------------------------ Location Low Temp (F) Date Kenton (Mesonet) 0 10/31/2019 Freedom 3 10/29/1993 Eva (Mesonet) 6 10/31/2019 Beaver (Mesonet) 7 10/31/2019 Boise City (Mesonet) 7 10/31/2019 Hooker (Mesonet) 7 10/31/2019 Waynoka 8 10/31/1993 Boise City 9 10/30/1993 Taloga 9 10/31/1993 ------------------------------------------------------
We'll have to wait to see if any NWS COOP sites recorded anything lower, but the Mesonet readings alone point towards the historic cold that has encompassed much of the western half of the country.

On Nov. 2, 1951, Kenton hit -9 degrees, so that earliest record for that date will hold for quite awhile. And on Nov. 3, 1991, much of NW OK was below zero. Much colder historical records are just days away, but still...
The cold in the far western Panhandle is aided by a bit of snow on the ground, as you can just barely make out in the latest visible satellite image. Still a bit dark out west.

And if you're gonna blow all-time records out of the water, you're obviously going to break some daily records as well. This morning's lows blew a lot of the low temperature records right out of the frozen water. For many of you across western Oklahoma, welcome to the coldest Halloween morning there ever was. We'll fix that grammar later when it's warmer.

Luckily, we're on a warming trend, or as it should be known..."a not so frigging cold" trend. We will warm up into the 40s and 50s this afternoon, so we won't see a repeat of 1991's frigid Halloween (see yesterday's Ticker). This will be more like 2017's version come trick-or-treat time.

Those temperatures are still below normal. That's it. Go enjoy your candy. How about we save the cold weather records for summer, mmm'kay?
