Summer 1999: Near-average precipitation, right?
As the climatologist's summer draws to a close this week, it appears that it was a near-normal summer, precipitation-wise:
June 1, 1999 through August 29, 1999 Climate Division Total Departure Pct Normal Panhandle 7.86" +0.14" 102 % North Central 13.23" +3.92" 142 % Northeast 11.70" +1.33" 113 % West Central 7.54" -0.76" 91 % Central 9.48" +0.45" 105 % East Central 9.44" -0.11" 99 % Southwest 7.97" -0.02" 100 % South Central 7.85" -1.03" 88 % Southeast 8.55" -2.03" 81 % Statewide 9.40" +0.19" 102 %
However, look at precipitation figures since July 1st:
July 1, 1999 through August 29, 1999 Climate Division Total Departure Pct Normal Panhandle 3.43" -1.26" 73 % North Central 4.56" -1.01" 82 % Northeast 2.85" -3.00" 49 % West Central 2.76" -1.77" 61 % Central 2.28" -2.66" 46 % East Central 1.10" -4.36" 20 % Southwest 2.33" -1.97" 54 % South Central 2.18" -2.48" 47 % Southeast 2.00" -4.22" 32 % Statewide 2.64" -2.62" 50 %
It's a tale of two seasons within a season.
