ZOUNDS!

Well that was interesting, Mother Nature. As if raining 53,000-degree bolts of death throughout OKC wasn't enough, she also decided to dump a May's worth of rain in one day. A monumental August OKC rain record was shattered, and another is poised to fall. From the Norman NWS office (their shouting, not mine):
RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK 705 AM CDT WED AUG 15 2018
...NEW RECORD DAILY RAINFALL SET AT OKLAHOMA CITY AUG 14TH...
THE OFFICIAL MEASURED RAINFALL AT WILL ROGERS WORLD AIRPORT IN OKLAHOMA CITY ON AUGUST 14 WAS 5.06 INCHES. THIS EXCEEDS THE PREVIOUS RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.93 INCHES, WHICH OCCURRED IN 1989.
THE 5.06 INCHES MEASURED AUGUST 14TH ALSO BECOMES THE NEW RECORD RAINFALL FOR ANY CALENDAR DAY IN AUGUST. THAT PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 4.62 INCHES, MEASURED ON AUGUST 11 IN 2008.
WEATHER RECORDS FOR OKLAHOMA CITY DATE BACK TO NOVEMBER 1890.
So not only did the 5.06 inches yesterday break the record for Aug. 14, it also became the highest OKC rainfall total ever, dating back to 1890!
The monumentalness (really?) of yesterday's total doesn't end there. It also tied for the 12th highest daily total in OKC history.
-**- Rank Value Date 1 7.62 2010-06-14 2 7.53 1970-09-22 3 7.10 2015-05-06 4 7.08 1927-10-01 5 6.75 1932-06-03 6 6.64 1993-05-08 7 5.64 2013-05-31 8 5.63 1970-05-29 9 5.60 1981-07-27 10 5.45 1983-10-20 11 5.38 1987-05-27 12 5.06 2018-08-14 12 5.06 1913-07-01 -***-
That's strictly for Will Rogers Airport, the official OKC observation site. There have been higher totals at other locations within OKC. Our retired OKC North Mesonet site that sat on the campus of the Oklahoman, for instance, recorded 11.26 inches on June 14, 2010 (same day as Will Rogers Airport's highest total).
You can see the footprint of that heavy rain event in the 24-hour rainfall map from the Mesonet, centered directly over SW OKC.

The 3.47 total right next to the tiny spot in SW OKC is from Norman, so the wealth was spread around to some degree. Altus was another big winner with 3.79 inches, although that was highly localized as well. When you extend the period back 14 days, we start to see the enormity of the localized rain totals from central through southeastern OK.

For the Aug. 1-14 period, the Clayton Mesonet site in Pushmataha County is at 609 percent of normal, for crying out loud! Still some areas left wanting, but by and large August has been good for Oklahoma. Northern and western areas of the state are in dire need of a good rain.
Looking forward, the rain ain't over. Some of this 7-day forecast total map includes rain that already fell this morning, but more rain chances are on the way as we approach the weekend and beyond.

Now we start to look at the statewide total for August. Through the 15th, still only 2.46 inches, which is 1.03 inches above normal to rank as the 14th wettest such period on record. I'm not sure how much higher we can zoom up the charts statewide as we go forward, but I'd settle for northern and western OK to get their fair share now. some places simply DON'T need much more for awhile.
