Bleary-eyed




I am definitely not bright-eyed, nor bushy-tailed this morning, much like many of
you that had the privelidge (I'll spell it correctly when I wake up) of staying
up overnight to keep track of the severe weather bearing down on your house.

How does the 10th- and 11th- strongest wind gusts in Mesonet history (starting
Jan. 1, 1994) sound to you? Yep, Hinton was the very unlucky recipient of
reworking the graphic that I had just produced 10 days ago for when Eva had their
96 mph gust! The Hinton Mesonet site recorded a 102.2 mph and a 100.6 mph gust
at 1:15 am and 1:20 am, respectively. That's 5-10 minutes of an EF1 tornado!



But that wasn't all the non-fun to be had, I'm afraid. We actually had 56 severe
wind gusts reported by Mesonet sites over the last 24 hours, including 8 of at
least 80 mph, and 22 of at least 70 mph.



Oh, and hail. ALL HAIL, uhhhhhhh....HAIL!



We did get some good rains with the storms. In fact, in many cases, too much
rain.



Heck, it's raining right now for crying out loud!



These are classic early-summer thunderstorm complexes when we're in northwest
flow. They form up in the High Plains and plunge to the southeast, often with
a lot of momentum transferred down to the surface, hence the Derecho-esque
track of winds from NW OK down through the Red River.





And Mother Nature ain't done, but probably not as bad as last night.







We'll take the rain, but let's hold off on the historic wind gusts, shall we?
