April's been warm? Really?

Well, sort of. After enjoying, which is not nearly a strong enough word, the
warmest March on record in Oklahoma, April has seemed downright cool to this
cold-blooded creature. But do the numbers back up my feelings? Well, again ...
sort of. Let's take a look at the Mesonet numbers for April 1-23 and see what
they tell us. We can throw March's numbers in there as well to see how we're
stacking up to last month.

-****-
Tmax Tmin Tavg
April 1-23 Avg. 72.7F 50.4F 61.6F
April 1-23 Normal 71.2F 45.0F 58.1F
April 1-23 Dep. 1.5F 5.4F 3.5F

March 1-31 Avg. 71.5F 47.5F 59.5F

So at least for the first 23 days of April thus far, it actually has been quite
a bit warmer than normal, especially for the morning lows. The high temperatures
haven't been that out of control, on the other hand. High and low temperatures
have been very similar to March, just a tad cooler. At 61.6 degrees, April is
already on course to finish as one of the 25-warmest on record for the state,
dating back to 1895.

We have seven more days to go, and the next couple of days promise to be
extremely warm with some possible record-setting temperatures in store. That
will probably move April up in the rankings, provided it doesn't get unusually
cold after that warmth.

The highest temperature reached by the Mesonet thus far in April (and 2012) is
98 degrees, recorded at Altus on April 1. That is the highest temperature
recorded by the Mesonet since September 29, 2011. April 1 was also the
warmest day on a statewide-average basis so far this year at 74.7 degrees. That
also marked the warmest day across the state since October 7, 2011, which had
a statewide average of 76.8 degrees. We'll see if we can top that tomorrow.

Oklahoma's tornado count for 2012 now stands at 30 according to NWS-Norman
Tornado counter extraordinaire Doug Speheger, by the way. Just a last minute
tidbit to throw off the boring climate stuff.
