Brrrr!!

Those that left the house this morning without a jacket were in for quite a
surprise with lows falling into the 40s over most of the state.

The Oklahoma Mesonet station at Oilton (west of Tulsa) even managed to fall
to a very chilly 36 degrees. That is the coldest measurement recorded by the
Mesonet since Boise City saw 36 degrees on May 9, 2010. Oilton is one of those
stations that has the chance to get a bit lower than the surrounding area due to
the local terrain. With very light winds and little in the way of cloud cover,
the temperature plummeted, as seen on Oilton's meteogram.

Fore!!

On September 15, severe thunderstorms produced at least six tornadoes and lots
of wind damage in Kansas near Wichita. Now one of the by-products of those
storms was some very VERY large hail, including a stone that was 7.75 inches
in diameter.

That'll put a knot in your noggin! That stone fell in southwest Wichita and
will no doubt set the record for largest diameter hailstone in Kansas. The
stone was 15.5 inches in circumference and weighed 1.1 lbs. The previous
record was 5.7 inches in diameter, although that one topped the latest stone at
17.6 inches in circumference and 1.65 lbs.

By the way, that type of hail is not good for a golf course. You might as well
have Carl the assistant greenskeeper (sorry, "Caddyshack" reference) out there
trying to blow up a gopher with some C-4 explosives.
