Another Calvin passes into history

French theologian John Calvin passed in 1564. Calvin Coolidge left us in 1933.
Carbon fixation fans will note Nobel Prize winner Melvin Calvin died in 1997.
And now, the second-most important Calvin in history is calling it quits...the
Calvin (CALV) Mesonet site. Due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances,
the Oklahoma Mesonet is decommissioning its Calvin site, effective
immediately.

The Calvin Mesonet site was commissioned on January 1, 1994. Since its
inception, it has stood as a silent weather sentinel at latitude 34? 59' 32" N
and longitude 96? 20' 3" W, approximately 5 miles WNW of Calvin in Hughes
County, some 234 meters above mean sea level. The highs and lows of its
existence are as follows:

Maximum air temperature: 111?F 09/03/2000
Minimum air temperature: 0?F 12/09/2005
Maximum daily rainfall: 4.26 inches 03/18/2008
Maximum monthly rainfall: 8.89 inches 10/2004
Maximum annual rainfall: 43.02 inches 1996
Maximum wind speed: 63.0 mph 06/11/2003

A replacement site for Hughes County will soon be found and we will
announce the winner of the "here's a 10-meter-tall tower for your land"
sweepstakes as soon as possible.

Oh, and in case you are wondering...if the Calvin Mesonet site only rates
second best according to the fledgling brand new replacement Ticker Staff,
what's number one??? Unless there are stuffed tigers prowling Hughes County,
we'll keep that a secret.

Hey, until we get a "Garfield" Mesonet site...same to you!
