The Oklahoma Insurance Department, in partnership with the Oklahoma
Climatological Survey, is hosting an upcoming conference to do what
Oklahomans do best...talk about the weather.

Oklahoma Climate & Loss Mitigation Conference
October 18, 2006
8:30 a.m. ? 4:30 p.m.

National Weather Center Building
120 David L. Boren Blvd.
Norman, OK 73072-7305

We all are familiar with the tornadoes and severe storms that ? well, in most
years ? seem to plague Oklahoma. But did you know that Oklahoma is home to
other weather hazards? In fact, the state?s Hazard Mitigation Plan lists
seven weather-related hazards: tornadoes, severe storms (hail, wind and
lightning), flooding, winter storms, wildfires, drought, and extreme
temperatures. In a state that prides itself on being ready for tornadoes, we
have had to instead fight drought and wildfires over this past year. This
conference will talk about all of these hazards and things we can do to make
us safer from all of them.

The conference draws together perspectives from Norman?s weather and climate
community with practitioners in the field of hazard mitigation. Topics that
will be covered include

Weather Hazards ? Learn what our hazards are and how we deal with them
Climate Variations ? How are hazards changing and why?
Risk Mitigation ? Things homeowners and business owners can do to reduce their vulnerability
Community Planning ? Engage your city planners to make your whole town safer

Whether you are an insurance adjuster, community planner, emergency manager,
or just someone interested in weather, this conference will give you a
perspective on how we can make our homes and communities safer from Mother
Nature?s fury. As an added bonus, insurance agents and adjusters can qualify
for six hours of continuing education credit.

The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $25 through October 12
($35 thereafter or at-the-door). To register, or for additional information,
