Heat Bursts Pop Tulsa Area
The opening years of Mesonet data have revealed surprising truths on
several scales about Oklahoma's weather and climate. One such surprise
is the frequency of heat bursts: they happen much more often than we
previously thought.
Last night, the Tulsa area exerienced a heat burst event, as detected
by several Mesonet stations in the area (as well as several NWS and
broadcast TV meteorologists!):
This was a relatively large-scale event, as heat bursts go. Around
midnight a cluster of once-severe storms tracked east-northeast away
from OKC and deteriorated.
Mesonet stations from Chandler to the east side of the Tulsa metro
area picked up the resulting heat burst (in varying degrees of
intensity, of course). The ASOS station at Tulsa recorded a gust
of 48 mph at 1:10 am, when the temperature there rose to 75F!
