Wind rose Appreciation Week: Day 1, East vs. West
This week's first wind rose segment is a simple look at wind roses
from five stations across the Top of Oklahoma (to borrow a term from
the Top of Oklahoma Museum in Blackwell).
Begin your westward march at Nowata in northeastern Oklahoma. Links
at the top of each page will spur you westward.

From Nowata to Newkirk to Cherokee to Beaver to Boise City, notice
that the prevailing winds veer around the compass from southeasterly
to southwesterly. Why so? Probably the biggest effect is the
more frequent mixing down of westerly momentum in western Oklahoma
due to [dry] convective conditions. A very close and overlapping
cousin to this would be the frequent invasion of dry lines in western
Oklahoma, especially in spring through early summer.
By the way, there is a subsequent and noticeable region of net
long-term convergence in western Oklahoma.
Tomorrow, let's look at some time-of-day slices of wind climatologies.
