We Prefer to Call it "Multi-tasking"
Freezing rain is occurring in parts of western Oklahoma early this
afternoon. How do we know? Our wind sensors told us so. Take a
look at the noon weather map from the Oklahoma Mesonet:
See the "calm winds" at Arnett, Camargo and Seiling?
( if you're not current on your Mesonet station locations, here's
a cheat sheet: )
Those aren't calm winds ... they're frozen propvanes. These are
a pretty good, but FAR from perfect, indicator of significant icing
near the ground (10 meters above the ground, to be exact).
If you want to see a propvane enter the throes of icy constriction,
check out any of these meteograms:
Notice that the wind speeds grind toward zero and the precipitation
stops recording shortly after temperatures drop below freezing.
When radar indicates precip, but the rain gauge doesn't, this could
mean precipitation is freezing at the gauge (about a foot or so
off the ground).
For more reading (and cool pictures!), this topic was treated more
thoroughly during the first few weeks of the year, when a large
and costly ice storm crippled much of Oklahoma:
