Severe Thunderstorms Rake State

Very strong straight-line winds associated with a mesoscale
convective system raked much of western Oklahoma in the last 18 hours
or so. The MCS presented a few bow echoes during its southward march
across the state, and the Mesonet has the numbers to corroborate.

These southward-marching MCS's are not uncommon in Oklahoma during
August. They bring valuable rainfall during a climatologically dry
time of year. Much of the area serviced by this MCS's rainfall has been
recently plagued by long-term drought, so several inch-plus rainfall
values were highly appreciated, despite coming at the expense of broken
limbs, downed trees and some power outages.

Rainfall from this MCS seemed to prefer new Mesonet stations, as
two-inch values were recorded at two of the network's most recent
additions, at Bee and Norman.
