In recent years, advances in technology have allowed for efficient
dissemination of forecasts and climatological data services. But this
is no recent phenomenon. New technology has enhanced service for years,
as illustrated in this announcement, from the July 1904 issue of the
U.S. Weather Bureau's Report on "Climate and Crops - Oklahoma and Indian
Territory Section":

"FORECASTS BY TELEPHONE. An arrangement has been completed with the
Missouri and Kansas Telephone Company whereby the forecasts will be
telephoned from the [U.S. Weather Bureau's Oklahoma Territory
Section's] Central Office in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Territory,
to all exchanges over Oklahoma Territory daily. By ten every
morning the forecast will reach the following named points
in the Section for the use of the public:

Renfrow, Medford, Jefferson, Pond Creek, Kremlin, Enid, Waukomis,
Hennessey, Dover, Kingfisher, Okarche, Darlington, El Reno, Fort Reno,
Calumet, Geary, Union, Minco, Chickasha, Cereal, Yukon, Council, Moore,
Norman, Noble, Lexington, Purcell, Spencer, Choctaw, Harrah, McCloud,
Dale, Shawnee, Tecumseh, Stroud, Davenport, Chandler, Wellston, Jones,
Luther, Arcadia, Edmond, Guthrie, Seward, Navina, Cashion, Campbell,
Coyle, Ripley, Perkins, Cushing, Stillwater, Mulhall, Orlando, Perry,
Ceres, Red Rock, Bliss, Ponca City, Autwine, Tonkawa, Blackwell and
Newkirk, Oklahoma Territory - and Arkansas City and Caldwell, Kansas."

Wow, that's 65 phone calls every morning! Fortunately for the Bureau's
dedicated callers, another advancement - the modern throat lozenge - was
gaining popularity in the early 1900s.
