Frosty Morning in Northern Oklahoma (Again)
Thirty-three Mesonet stations observed temperatures below freezing
this morning. This total includes three stations (Antlers, Oilton
and Nowata) which observed temps at or below 28 F, considered
a "hard" freeze for several agricultural applications.
Are hard freezes unusual in Oklahoma in mid-April? For these three
locations, yes. At all three locations, April 17th falls later on
the calendar than the 90th percentile date for hard freezes:
Antlers: April 3rd
Oilton: April 5th (no date for Oilton, using nearby Cushing)
Nowata: April 12th
So what does "90th percentile date for hard freezes" mean in English?
Well, the date is based on statistics culled from historical data.
It's easiest for most people to think of it as the "during any given
spring there's a one-out-of-ten chance of a hard freeze on or after
this day" date. That's not the exact definition, and statisticians
and professional hair-splitters will argue fine points with it, but
that's the way this climatologist thinks of it (don't tell on me).
Attached are this morning's sub-freezing minimum temps, with the
cumulative time below freezing in hours and minutes. Keep in mind
that minimum temperatures can vary locally depending on terrain and
exposure, especially on a calmer morning like this morning.
