Welcome to December

December is the first of the climatologist's three winter months.
Climatologically speaking, December is the second coldest month of
the year (January is the coldest) for each of Oklahoma's nine climate
divisions.

The winter months are also the driest months of the calendar for the
state, especially in western and central regions. Again, December is
second to January as the most extreme month, in the statewide average
and in most of the individual climate divisions.

Oklahoma's coldest December (by far) occurred in 1983, with a
statewide mean temperature of 25.9F. That month broke a record by
nearly five degrees that stood for 74 years prior (30.6F, set in 1909)
The last half of that month was one of the coldest periods in state
history, with minimum temperatures reaching well below zero across
most of the state on several nights.

Here are some statewide normals and superlatives for the month:

Normal December liquid precip: 1.66"
Oklahoma's wettest December: 4.98" 1984
Oklahoma's driest December: 0.10" 1936

Normal December temperature: 38.7F
Oklahoma's warmest December: 45.4F 1965
Oklahoma's coolest December: 25.9F 1983
