Ugh!

A very cool map from GOES-16 showing the snow across the northwestern half of
the state, a stubborn low cloud deck across the southeast, and lots of cool
terrain features (rivers, lakes, Kansas???). Even a great example of snow
streaks down in southwest Texas. The linear bands of snow from the SW to the NE
are quite clear down in that area. So is the demarcation line in the I44 corridor
where that freezing line meandered back and forth.

Okay, we had our fun. A bit of snow, a good night to hang out by the heater vent
(or fire, for those inclined) and eat a big heaping bowl of chili (or ice cream,
for those inclined). But for most, the walk from the car into work this morning
was a brutal reminder of the price we pay for our MOMENTARY (sorry, this is
non-negotiable!) wintry fun. And imagine those that are out working in it.

This quartet of Mesonet temperature maps should be pinging your misery scale. If
not, you're one of THOSE people...cold weather fans. Seek help, to go along with
your four layers of clothing.

The snow performed about like it was supposed to yesterday, with more than 5
inches being reported up in the far northwest and scattered 1-2 inch amounts
elsewhere. It melted in most spots faster than it fell, but that was somewhat
expected given the ground temperatures and flirtations with the freezing line.
But the arctic is open and has been pouring in for the last 24 hours. You can
see it's origins in our national temperature maps.

The journey to a northern climate has been pretty steady over the last 48 hours,
as evidenced by the 48-hour meteogram from Kingfisher as it plunges from just
sort of a cold November-ish straight into January territory.

And we are at extreme cold levels, even though we're in November. This is a
bit early to be this cold as our flirtation (my, aren't we flirtatious lately)
with record cold temperatures indicate.

Now we go for a warm up through the rest of the week until our next cold front
on Saturday. Don't worry, nothing like this current arctic blast. No snow
either. Just cold, as if that wasn't enough.
