Another Comparison to 1998, With a Surprising Wrinkle

This year's summer heat wave got a late start compared to 1998, but
it has made the most of the time it's had. Since July 23rd, most of
the state has actually seen warmer afternoon maximum temperatures
on average than in 1998. A graphic is included at:

http://ticker.mesonet.org/archive/19990812/temp_comp.gif

Overnight low temperatures have been warmer than during this period
in 1998, even moreso than afternoon temperatures, especially in areal
extent (a graphic will be available tomorrow). During last year's
extended drought, dewpoints were depressed and overnight temperatures
actually cooled more than overnight temperatures in the last few weeks
of this year.
