Fittstown Mesonet site breaks network rainfall record!


The Oklahoma Mesonet has been chugging along for nearly 25 years now (it will hit
25 years on Jan. 1, 2019). Until today, the highest daily rain total it had
measured at it's 110+ sites was 12.42 inches at Burneyville back on April 29,
2009. Emphasis on "until today."

Between 5:55 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. today, September 21, the Oklahoma Mesonet site at
Fittstown recorded 12.44 inches of rainfall, breaking the old record from
Burneyville. And the record continues to increase with each added drop.

Here are the new top 5 Mesonet rainfall totals in it's history (Jan. 1, 1994-Sept.
21, 2018):

Very impressive! However, since it is still raining, and we have until midnight
to continue adding to the totals, we now look towards the state's all-time
daily rainfall record of 15.68 inches at Enid on October 11,
1973. That total was recorded by the National Weather Service cooperative
observer, so we're mixing networks just a bit. But both networks' totals are
valid. In fact, the NWS categorizes over 60 Mesonet sites as COOP sites as
well. At any rate, Fittstown continues to zoom up the rankings of top-10
daily rain totals in the state's history, regardless of network.

displays the core-dump of moisture starting early this morning.



And a look at our soggy day, with that ridiculous amount of rain at Fittstown
and surrounding areas.



We will of course keep you updated throughout the rest of the night as we look
to move up the all-time daily rainfall records.

In fact, as I've typed all this, we've probably increased that record a
tenth or two.
