Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun (and summer), and I say it's all right.
Well, we've broken out of our semi-tropical start to September, with the dreary
skies and rain, which then became dreary skies and drizzle. Just a look back at
the rain over the last 10 days tells us how wet that first bit of September was.
As for the dreary, the statewide departure from average (2003-2017) percent
possible sunshine as calculated by the OK Mesonet shows a deep, dark hole to
start the month (filled by rainwater, of course...start the pumps!). We started
the graph on January 1 so you could see our roller coaster year as far as
clouds vs. sun thus far.
A statewide map of the individual station data is pretty telling as well, with
a statewide average of 39% possible sunshine over the month's first 9 days.
In fact, that's easily the "darkest" first 9 days of September since the
Mesonet's inception back in 1994. It's only 9 days, but that's a long time for
Okies to go without decent sunshine in early September!
Now that we've had all that muggy-but-mild weather, we can use some sun to start
greening things up and drying some of that moisture out. The mosquitoes are on
their way as we speak! We'll now see lots of sun which will help with that, and
temperatures are on the rise. We should see a lot of upper 80s and low 90s by
the end of the week, which is very seasonable for this time of year, if not a
bit above normal.
Mother Nature pulled a fast one on us, literally, by having the wet stuff come
the week BEFORE the State Fair. So what's in store for State Fair weather?
Fair to partly fried.
