Secret Weapons!
We have many responsibilities here at the Oklahoma Climatological Survey and the
Oklahoma Mesonet. One is to control Oklahoma's weather using a vast array of
advanced technology obtained from extra-terrestrials that landed in Slapout way
back in 1953. Take that Roswell! If that technology fails, however, or if it is
simply something I made up for the purposes of this story (ahem), then we resort
to talking about the weather. You see, when we talk about something, like LACK
OF RAINFALL ( http://ticker.mesonet.org/select.php?mo=06&da=10&yr=2009 ), that
normally causes widespread rain within the next 24 hours. And that is exactly
what is occurring as storms move into Oklahoma from the west.
Consider it a sort of reverse psychology you might use with your kids (e.g.
"Don't you dare eat those carrots on your plate or you'll be in big trouble!").
So yes, we pulled a fast one on Mother Nature. Since we learned from Chiffon
Margarine back in the 1970s that it wasn't nice to fool Mother Nature, let's
hope she doesn't send much severe weather along with the rain.

Triple-Digit Temperatures
While it doesn't look like we'll be hitting 100 anywhere today, the
Oklahoma Mesonet has already recorded a few of those 100-degree temps in the
last few days. It sort of snuck by us this weekend, but here is a list of the
triple-digit temperatures we've seen on the Oklahoma Mesonet so far this year
(and remember we round up, which is why the Ticker staff is 5'9" instead of
5'8"). These are the first triple-digit temperatures measured by the Oklahoma
Mesonet since Fairview hit 100 on August 29, 2008:
ALTU: 2009-06-06 101.39
ALTU: 2009-06-09 102.40
BEAV: 2009-06-06 101.23
HOLL: 2009-06-06 99.64
Now for some more reverse psychology: "hey, the last thing Associate State
Climatologist Gary McManus would want is a million dollars. I dare anyone to..."
