The winds in January are decidedly bi-modal, bi-polar, or however you
want to describe them. Take, for instance, the January wind rose from
the Shawnee Mesonet station:



Each colored "petal" on the wind rose represents how often the wind
blows from that direction. Obviously, in January, winds prefer either
north or south. There is not much room for in-between (otherwise known
as easterly or westerly).
