Happy Break Even Day
Well, about half a summer has passed and neither Tulsa nor Oklahoma
City has topped the 100-degree plateau. That's pretty unusual in
iteslf, as the century mark has been bested by July 26 in about
six out of every seven years.
What makes July 27 extra special, at least for Tulsa climate fans,
is that this is triple-digit "break even" day for the Oil Capitol
of the World. That's right, Tulsa's historical record says that
if the century mark still stands undisturbed as the sun rises on
July 27th, there's a 50/50 chance that it will survive the year.
Oklahoma Cityans, the news is even cooler for you. Your "break even"
day was Sunday, which means you're two whole days past a 50/50 chance,
and history's signal is beginning to creep, ever so slowly, toward
"it ain't gonna happen this year"!
But, as with all climate matters in the Sooner state, there's a
catch. The latest "First 100" at Will Rogers World Airport occurred
on September 1st (in 1989). Tulsa International Airport's latest
occurred nearly three weeks earlier on the calendar: August 12th
(in 1958).
So, while Oklahoma Cityans may be two days past their "break even"
date, they have to wring their hands later into the summer than
their friends up in Green Country!
