Auroral Activity in Oklahoma?
A particularly strong "solar flare and high velocity Earthward directed
coronal mass ejection" (that's "solar activity" to the simple folks at
the Ticker) was observed at yesterday morning. This means that those
of us who live in the southern U.S. have a rare chance to witness the
aurora borealis, or northern lights, tonight and possibly tomorrow night.
The aurora might be visible as far south as the Gulf Coast!
The down side of this is that the storm may also cause interference in
communications. During a recent period of strong solar activity, even
Mesonet communications were temporarily affected.
COCAMS/NWA Meeting to Feature Impact of Weather on OU Athletics
Speaking of high velocity, interference and the occasional ejection,
Larry Naifeh of the OU Athletic Department will adddress the Central
Oklahoma Chapters of the American Meteorological Society and National
Weather Association Monday night (Oct. 1) at 7:30 pm. He'll present
"The Impact of Weather on Athletic Venue and Game Operations at the
University of Oklahoma". Here are the details (Adobe PDF format):
