August 2001: Warmer than Normal

The preliminary numbers for August 2001 are in, and the month was
warmer than normal across the state.  All nine of Oklahoma's climate
divisions reported average temperatures about 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit
greater than normal.  The statewide average temperature of 82.6 F
places August 2001 in the warmest third of Augusts on record.

Precipitation for the month was mixed (relative to normal).  The
statewide average rainfall (2.38") was slightly less than normal.
Many counties in northern and western Oklahoma were significantly
below normal for the month, continuing a trend that began in early
summer.

summer (June-July-August) period.
