Very Wet May 2001 follows Two Dry Months
The preliminary numbers are in and they confirm what we all knew:
May 2001 was very wet compared to normal. The statewide average
of 7.12" rainfall during the month was about one-and-a-half times
the normal value of just less than five inches. West central and
east central Oklahoma received more than nine inches rainfall on
average, much of if coming in the final week of the month.
The wet month followed a very dry March-April period and even May's
cloudbursts couldn't bring the seasonal (remember: climatologists
call March through May "Spring") values up to normal in much of the
state. While the northwestern half (or so) of the state was at or
above normal precip for the season, southern and eastern Oklahoma
remained below normal. Overall, the state recorded near normal
(93% of normal) precip for the season.
