It's Official: It's Been Cold

The official numbers from December are in, and they put an exclamation
point on what most Oklahomans already knew:  it was cold.

These official numbers won't become officially official until they
are certified (somehow, climatologists don't get 24-hour cable news
coverage or court intervention during the certification process).

Here are some details:

December 2000's mean statewide temperature of 30.8 F was the
second-coldest December since records began in 1892.

December 2000's mean statewide temperature was 8.7 F colder than
the December normal of 39.5 F.

December 2000 was the 33rd-wettest December of the 109 on record.

The November-December period's mean statewide temperature of
37.0 F was the coldest such period on record.

The mean annual temperature for the year 2000 was 60.5 F,
0.3 F warmer than normal.

The year 2000 was the 48th-warmest of the 109 years on record.

The annual data revealed that the year 2000 was the 33rd-wettest on
record.  Considering that virtually no precipitation fell in August
and September, the other ten months were fairly wet.

So far in January 2001, Oklahoma temperatures have been slightly
below normal to near normal.
