1999 to be Most Prolific Tornado Year on Record
Three tornado incidents were reported yesterday afternoon near
Sapulpa in Creek County. If confirmed, this will bring the number
of confirmed tornadoes to 135 for the year of 1999. This represents
the most tornadoes ever confirmed in Oklahoma since records have been
taken.
The previous record of 107 was set in 1957. It was eclipsed on
May 25th of this year, when several minor tornadoes touched down in
southwestern Oklahoma.
The average number of tornadoes observed annually in Oklahoma is 52.
During a 24-hour period on May 3rd and 4th of this year, 73 tornadoes
were observed within the borders of the state of Oklahoma.
