Today in Oklahoma Weather History
Sixteen years ago this week, the remnants of Hurricane Tico interacted
with a stalled front over the Souther Great Plains and dumped flooding
rainfall across Oklahoma. Some of the impressive rainfall totals, from
the 20th alone:
10.62" Shawnee
8.81" Prague
8.45" Seminole
8.40" Roosevelt
8.37" Norman
8.00" Purcell
8.00" Welty
This configuration isn't unheard of in Oklahoma. In fact, many of the
state's autumn floods are the results of tropical moisture being lifted
over a quasi-stationary front. These events account for some of the
September-October secondary rainfall maxima seen over most of the state.
