OKC sets June record, and it rains in the state!

The temperature at Will Rogers Airport (is it still international?) reached 90+
degrees today, breaking the record for most days at or above 90 degrees for June
at 28. The previous record of of 27 occurred back in 1911. Here are your top
Junes in OKC with number of days with 90 degrees or higher.

2011 28
1911 27
1934 25
1953 24
1990 24

Tulsa is also working on their record as well. Their record is 29 days set back
in 1911 and 1934, and they're currently at 27 since they hit 90 today. They are
well on their way to tying that 29-day mark.

The average temperature at Altus and Grandfield during June has been 89.7
degrees thus far. A couple of Ticker readers have been prompting me about
how close that is to a record. Well, it's getting pretty darned close to being
a record for ANY month, at least for the Mesonet. Here are the top-5 Mesonet
average station temperatures by month (including this month, which shouldn't
be done but I'm doing it anyway).

Grandfield July 2001 90.3 degrees
Burneyville July 1998 90.0 degrees
Altus June 2011 89.7 degrees (June 1-27)
Grandfield June 2011 89.7 degrees (June 1-27)
Cherokee July 2001 89.6 degrees

The first June that shows up on the list before 2011 is Altus with 84.5 degrees
back in 1998 ... in 157th place. July and August dominate the first few
hundred.

I'll see if I can rank them along with COOP stations after the month is over.

Some nice rains fell in the state this morning. It won't be enough to dent the
drought, unfortunately. I'm not even going to say "it's a good start" like I
normally do. But, it's a good start (what the heck). Here is the Mesonet total
map for the day with the River Forecast Center's estimate thrown on top.

We had streaks of a half to about an inch in places from northwestern Oklahoma
down through central parts of the state. Then a similar area up in the
northeast. The area southwest of Tahlequah received a heckuva shower with
radar estimates close to 3 inches.

Envy is wrong, but it's okay to covet thy neighbor's rain.
