Dubious

I didn't want to ruin your day. Mine was ruined when my attempt to eat 13
Hostess Honeybuns in under 5 minutes was foiled by my alarm going off...it was
actually a dream but my pillow sure tasted good.

So we've done this several times since our drought-that-used-to-be-flash-drought-
but-is-now-just-drought began back on June 11. Back in July we had our first
"driest last 30 days in 100 years" going on in addition to an explosion of
summer heat, the hottest summer we've seen in these parts since 2011, in fact.
So that was the beginning of the flash drought. Then we get to September and after
some decent rains across various regions of Oklahoma, we start yet another
month-long dearth of precip. The tragedy here is that we are missing out on what
is considered our secondary rainy season, that period when the jet stream dips
down our way and we get good return flow from the Gulf. For quite a few locations,
September is the 3rd or 4th wettest month of the year behind May, June, and
sometimes April or October--the eastern half of the state usually...the fall
is a bit drier across western OK.

At any rate, we're missing out! In fact, since that flash drought began back
on June 11, that's also the driest such period in the last 100 years (or the
driest last 115 days in the last 100 years).

There is some wet (and cooler) weather on the way over the weekend into early
next week. I still don't see any drought-busting rains. I wouldn't even call
these drought-delaying rains.

But it's a start.
